15mm PSC M4A4 Shermans (Allied)

Hi folks,

This is my look at Plastic soldier company's 15mm plastic M4A4 Shermans. I wanted to create an Irish Guards armoured company for the Hells Highway book and I really did not want to buy more Battlefront models as I find them quite expensive. I found these online at Nobleknight games for $26.00 cdn and since they were half the price of the Battlefront ones I thought I'd get a box and see how they looked.

The group... 4 M4A4 Shermans and a Sherman v firefly... There are going (maybe) to be the used for my Irish Guards company.

A bit of a closer look... The models are EXTREMELY crisp and detailed... very very well made.

 A side view.

A close up of the side of one of the Shermans.... The tracks gave me a wee bit of trouble to start with, but after I took my time on the second tank I figured it out and they gave me no trouble afterwards......

The Firefly is a nice looking model... I really like it, and although the barrel seems to be a bit to thin, its still good.

This is a look at the side view of a PSC 15mm Sherman and a Battlefront 15mm Stuart. The only thing that I found off about the models is that they seemed a little on the small side. Not much but a little small. That is the only thing that I have a *small* issue with.... although the Battlefront models might be bigger than normal 15mm tanks, I would not know, as I only have Battlefront and PSC 15mm anything...

A front view of the same models...here you can kinda see that that Battlefront Stuart is almost as big as the PSC Sherman...

The group once again.... I will buy more of these as soon as I can...

On the up side:-

They are very clean models.
They look the part
They are easy to assemble
You get some variation in options
They paint easy...

On the down side:-

They are not an exact match to Battlefront
There is more assembly needed that the Resin BF ones (not much)
The track sometime give you trouble (glue on your hands is going to be normal)

And that it !! PSC 15mm Allied M4A4 Shermans

I'd give them a 8.5 / 10

FOW Welsh Guard Armoured squadron

This is my newly finished Welsh Guard armoured squadron. It was born out of my love for the look of the Cromwell tank. I purchased them just to paint a few and after a bit of pondering I decided that it would not cost all that much to create a Flames of War force with them. So here it is.....

The entire force. C.O, 2iC with two platoons of 3 Cromwells and a Sherman Firefly each. The fireflys are proxied right now for Challangers while I await delivery. They were delivered to the wrong house even though the address was clearly mine.

The C.O is noticeable by the two antenna on his turret. The 2iC has one, but he is the only Cromwell with one antenna and the tank commander showing out of the turret.

 1st platoon.....

 2nd platoon...

The Recce force is 3 Stuarts (Honeys)... these little guys will be used to (hopefully) capture objectives or seek and destroy enemy artillery.

28mm WWII skirmish

Just a quick update. I managed to have a WWII 28mm Skirmish game last night in Brampton Ont. It was I believe based on the rules called "Rules of engagement" ?.  Matched up were the Queens own rifles of Canada vs some 12th SS Hitler youth.

The QOR had (from memory) A HMG, 3" Mortar, 2" Mortar, Piat team, HQ squad and 3 squads of troopers. The HJ had a 3" mortar (?) a Half track, HQ squad and 3 SS squads.

I did not take allot of pics as I was enjoying the game and below is a basic overview of what happened.

The odd thing about this game is that my 1's and 2's took some time off last night and I managed to roll average for once. Average dice plus 4 MG42's in the hands of SS meant that I managed to do fairly well.

Pic 1:- This is turn 2. At the bottom of the pic my half track is racing off to the left of the table to support squad 1. My goal is to get to a house set up my MG teams and suppress any advance on the center. Squad 2 is setting up in the bocage in the lower right hand of the pic. They are to defend and just spot/slow the Canadian advance which is turning out to be 2 full squads of QOR coming right up the middle.

A pic of 2nd squad setting up. (MG42 team at the bottom of the pic) The first and 2nd turns were fun, as both our 3" mortars dueled it out in counter fire. I managed to kill 2 of his 3 men manning his mortar, but he in turn killed my spotter which meant I needed to have direct line of sight on any targets (which I did not).

The pic below shows what my 3rd squad was busy doing on the right flank. They ran full out on turns 1 and 2 to get to a large farm house in the middle of the map. When they got there the MG team set up in the top floor of the house, while the rest of the squad set up on the first floor to protect my right.

This pic shows my half track setting up facing a scary sight. A Canadian HMG team (which had just killed 2/3rds of my MG42 squad while they ran between a couple of houses) a 2" mortar, 3" mortar and a PIAT team !! If I don't kill the HMG and Piat team this flank is gonna get it bad.

Below we see my first two causalities from Davids HMG. I managed to pickup the MG42 and run for cover in the house and lay some fire down on the Piat team thankfully... but that HURT ! I did not even realise the HMG team did not move the turn before, so when he started looking for targets I just about pooped my pants.

Below is turn 3 and my MG on my half track has laid waste to the HMG and the 2" mortar.. This was a turning point in the game I think as by now most of Davids support squads were destroyed. Only his Piat team and one lone Canadian manning the 3" mortar were left. With my MG42 team in the house I managed to kill his Piat team right after he lost his HMG and 2" mortar.. not a good turn for David on the left flank. He still has a squad advancing here tho.

The MG team on the top floor of the farm house (on my right) opens up on some Canadians sneaking through an orchard. 3 brave lads went down, and the return fire was saved.

My half track backs up and fires into the Canadian squad advancing into the center of the table and manages 3 more quick kills. In his turn Davids remaining full strength squad on the left ran out from behind his building and opened up everything it had on my half track killing the MG team and ending that threat plus getting some revenge ! David did like getting revenge on Hitlers buzz saws as 9 of my 13 causalities were MG42 crewmen.

German turn 5:- After watching 8 Canadians jump out into the street and riddle my half track with fire and kill its MG team I had to think fast. I had 2 men manning a MG42 in the building just off frame to the right and 3 men inside defending them. I instantly had them charge out throwing grenades into the pile of Canadians whilst the MG team retreated out of the building and got into the half track to take over the MG mount. I actually thought I was sacrificing my 3 men to buy time for my half track and MG team to retreat back down the road to protect my left, but they managed to kill 5 guys with 3 grenades. David and I were both shocked but the threat to this flank was almost over.

The MG team and Halftrack start backing off. If any Canadians are left on this side, the half track will deal more MG42 death....

After a couple of more MG42 shots and a few more downed men the 2 Canadian squads in the center start to withdraw. I realise that once out of my field of fire I will have to advance and chase them. Below we see my 3rd squad on the right flank moving out of the farm house to give chance to the Canadians.

The center squad join the advance.

I did not manage to take any more pics, but on the left, the 3 remaining Canadians managed to throw their own grenades at my 3 Germans, but somehow I managed to save two of them...only to have the Canadian spotter who hid from the MG42 kill zones snipe one of the guys who moments before survived a grenade to the face.

It was on this high note that we called the game. A German victory (although I think David let me win :P). The rules are very bloody and MG's and grenades are just deadly !! Once the firing started models dropped super quickly.

I don't remember the causalities on the Canadian side fully, but my SS took 13, 9 MG crewmen, my spotter, a NCO from the command squad and 2 riflemen.

Davids Canadians took 14 on this right flank and I think 9 in the center advance and 4 men to my Mortar attack.. so I think it was 27 (although I cannot recall exactly).

David was a great player and a great guy... thanks allot for the game.... allot of fun ! The awesome models and terrain were all his.

10mm ACW

Thought it was time to update my years old 10mm ACW projects. The Civil war is one of my favourite periods to research simply because in North America their is so much written about the period. These figures were bought from Magister Militum a good 8 years back when I first wanted to get back into the period. The first time I was in this period I was back in 1990 when I was 10 years old. I was visiting with relatives in Etobicoke Canada when they brought me to the square one shopping mall in Mississauga Ontario. I had NEVER seen such a huge mall in my life up to then, and coming from a small country town in Ireland I was blown away. I was given $50.00 from my father that I had saved in the months before and off I went to spend it. I managed to find a hobby shop beside a Zellars store and left with a bag of stuff. They were clearing out their stock of 10mm ACW stuff and I managed to buy it all. When I got home to Ireland I spent lots and lots of time painting over 300 guys and I was as proud as punch. 4 years later my parents decided to move to Canada, and although I was not forced, I decided to sell my ACW collection. I sold it for 10 Irish pounds at a car boot sale. Enough of my life, back to the pics.
The armies I painted were not supposed to be about Lee vs Grant/others in the Eastern campaigns, but rather on the Western campaigns. I always liked this theatre of the civil war more because it always seemed to stink of desperate fighting in mud, forests, sieges, open battle, raids, and meeting encounters as forces bumped into each other by accident. I am a terrible dice roller, and when Im in command of any portion of the Confederates in the Eastern campaign I feel as though I am not supposed to lose even when outnumbered, and when I do.. it is doubly bad, as the historical Rebs would have smashed the yankees. In the Western campaigns the Rebs and Yanks were more evenly matched. Both had horrible commanders and great commanders, both were besieged at one point, and both had supply issues (at least now and then). One more reason I choose the Western theme is that four of my favourite Rebel generals fought in this theatre at the same time. Cleburne, Longstreet, DH Hill and Hood. Along with my Yankee favs such as Sherman, and Grant. Other notable generals I like to read about were A.S Johnston, Pemberton, Rosecrans and several others. Add to this the massive campaign map that these guys fought over and its easy to see why I choose it.
The figs are based 6 to a base for Infantry (3 cav) and are put into Brigades of 6/7 stands. Each base is roughly representative of 200-250 men. The Union Brigades were normally smaller than the Rebs, and would not really be able to stand up against the larger Reb 8 stand brigade but could count on a few extra brigades in the army to even the odds a bit. The smaller but more numerous Union Brigades also help give the Union Army more flexibility than the Rebs, as you could flank and Reb attack with your extra units and blunt the attacks.
The Union army also has much better artillery, and more of them. For that reason they have 12 rifled cannon vs the rebs 9 smooth bore guns.
The Union army consists of 12 Brigades of Infantry, 1 attached brigade of Cavalry and 12 batteries of artillery.
 The lone Union Cavalry brigade.

The Union force (tho uncompleted so far) comprises of 522 figs and 12 guns.

The Rebs.... the army consists of 12 Brigades of Infantry, 2 Brigades of Cavalry and 9 batteries of artillery.

The first Confederate Division of 4 large 8 stand brigades.
The Cavalry division. The Rebs had great cavalry in the west (mostly) and one of the positives I wanted the Rebs to have is in more and better cavalry. I intended this to help off set the Union major advantage in artillery.
General Longstreet...not quite him self in the West, but nothing could really save the Confederates in this theatre anyway, so I can understand why he did not meet with much success here (no-one really did)
Longstreet's Texan general John Bell Hood. Another figure who's reputation was tarnished in the west. His willingness to attack at every occasion helped win him fame in the east, but in the west it cost him dearly, as the confederate army was not as strong or as well supplied as Lees.
The Reb Cavalry division. These are missing the C.O Wheeler, but he'll be along soon.
Cleburnes Division.. ( I just had to have him in here )
 Breckinridge (or so I think)

The un-finished army consists of 681 figures and 9 guns.

FoW 15mm British Cromwells

After a few months of Epic Armageddon stuff, I decided to get back to my Historical stuff. I managed to paint several Epic armies, but fell short on completing my Cadians, Space wolves and Emperors Children factions. But oh well, I really wanted to finish this British Cromwell tank platoon that I had sitting around for almost 7 months. I don't know why but I like the look of the Cromwell over the Sherman, and since the stats are basically the same I bought a few.
First up is the Firefly with its 17pdr gun. I decaled it with the Guards symbols and since its in a Cromwell platoon it will have to be a Welsh Guards unit.
The C.O braving fire by sticking his head out of the tank to direct fire I guess.

I like these models very much and I plan on doing another platoon ASAP. The only issue I had with them was that I cleared them with gloss clear, Decaled them, and then cleared them in Games workshop ard'coat, but for what ever reason the ard'coat ate parts of the decals away. My wife thinks it makes them look great (some sort of hasty painting by the troops), but it upset me none the less.

Thanks

The start of my 6mm Cadians and 6mm Space wolves.

The start of the Cadian forces for Epic Armageddon.
The regular troops... "Cadian shock troopers". Two companies of 3 platoons.

The 2 companies of Kasrkin. One is the HQ company.

A couple of bad close ups.

The command stand for the entire force.

A preview of my Space wolves. This is a 6mm Blood claw pack.
Not the best paint job... but its fast and looks ok at an arms distance.
